Used Tires

December 22, 2010 by

If you are looking to save money on car care and up keep but find yourself in a situation where tires need to be replaced then you may want to look into used tires.  Used tires can be a great way to get you out of a bind should you find yourself needing a quick fix for a big problem.  They can also be great if you are looking for used tires for a specialty vehicle of some kind, say an ATV or trailer.  You should be careful though because not every used tire will wear the same even if they are from the same set.

I used to live in North Carolina and there was a wholesale used tires dealer there that was always going on and on about their used tire inventory.  It just so happened that I needed some used truck tires for an older model truck I had so I took it down for a look.  They had a HUGE inventory of used tires for sale.  All I needed was my desired tire size and a decent amount of time for them to find the tire.  In the end it worked out well as I outfitted my Ford Ranger with some BFG’s that had about 10,000 miles left on them so I was able to get a good deal on a tire sale.

The important thing to remember is what to look for when you start evaluating used tires for sale.  They need to have a stable sidewall and be free from major cracks and divots.  What most people fail to tell you is how to evaluate the inner tube which you will want to get brand new.  In short a used tire is only as good as its tread wall so make sure you look it over.

Tires will ware differently from position to position on the car and so there is a good chance you will not find all the tires in usable condition when you get them used.  That is fine if you are just looking for a full size spare or only need 1 tire to be replaced.  Most tires are only desinged to go for around 30 to 50 thousand miles which means if the tire looks pretty worn there is a reason its not still in use.  Do not plan on a used tire replacement lasting you more than a few months at best.  It is easiest to find matching used tires in your own local area rather than trying to source them online; used tires are very different than cheap tires.
