Truck Mud Tires and The People Who Love Them

August 17, 2010 by

Truck mud tires are specially designed for large SUV’s and trucks to displace the mud and allow the tread of the tire to make contact with the ground.  In order to do this the treads need to be large enough to channel away a significant amount of mud.  Light truck mud tires will do well in most off-roading situations, however, if the ground becomes really unstable or if you are in a remote location your truck mud tires better be the best of the best.

The Super Swamper and Mickey Thompson line of tires have proven themselves as leaders in performance and value.

Super Swamper TSL Bogger – This tire was designed with the professional mud bogger in mind.  The tire is able to perform in various conditions, it has been approved by the Department of Transportation and is street legal, a great truck mud tire option.

Super Swamper TSL / SX – This tire was engineered for the seriously rugged and just plain nasty off-road conditions.  The main priority in these situations is to maintain solid outer wall performance on the tire because of the consistent abuse the outer wall will take as it is pressed against rock, branches and other debris. This is for the serious truck mud tires enthusiast.

Mickey Thompson Tire Baja Claw Non- Radial – This is a super reinforced mud tire for trucks that will be crawling over rocks on a daily basis.  The reinforcement includes a layering of cut resistant compounds designed to prevent cuts in the truck mud tires wall.  The grooves in the tread are specifically designed to rock crawl.

Mickey Thompson Competition Baja Claw – This tire is designed to conform to abnormal surfaces and it is approved by the D.O.T. Because these tires have less tire pressure in order to grip the rock it is recommended that you get bead lock wheels along with these tires.

The people who love the truck mud tires are the same people taking trips to Moab, UT each year.  These individuals are serious about their off-road trips and need the best equipment to get the job done.  Whether you are mud bogging, think Super Swamper, or rock crawling, think Baja Claw, these tires can get the job done.  There are a lot of different manufactures out there, in order to get the right tire for your vehicle make sure you consider the purpose of the tire, the load it can carry and the tread type.

@ Chuck – great question, unfortunately that picture was the best one we could find to illustrate the purpose of a mud tire. The truth is that the tires in the photo are actually mud slingers designed for small remote controlled trucks. If you’re in the market for mud tires for your 4×4 let me know your year/make/model and I’ll get you the best recommendations.
